GARDEN SHOWCASE - Brian’s Botanical Bits

Sunday • August 10• 2-4PM

Enjoy a personal tour of the Garden with Director of Horticulture Brian O’Neil. During this informative Sunday stroll through some of our theme Gardens, Brian will highlight “must-have” plants as well as rare and unusual plants, explaining ways to incorporate them into your garden.

DAYLILIES THE PERFECT PERENNIAL• June 7

Melissa Butler, Curator of Herbaceous Plants

Their scientific name Hemerocallis means "beauty" and "day," but you can enjoy blooms from late spring to autumn in a rainbow of colors .They are able to survive with very little care, suitable for all types of landscapes, drought resistant and almost disease and insect free. Come learn how to incorporate them into your landscape and get you ideas ready before the Tidewater Daylily Flower Show and Plant Sale June 29.

INTRODUCTION TO LANDSCAPING

Introduction to Landscaping classSeptember 11, 18, 25 & October 2, 9

Thursdays • 7-9:30PM (5-week Session)    

Develop your ideas for fall planting in this five-night course. Senior Gardener Linda Saunders and Director of Horticulture and long-time Landscape Designer Brian O’Neil, VSLD, introduce students to the basic principles of landscape design. Participants will work on plans for their own home hardscapes, not on specific plant selection. This course is best suited for homeowners who are starting with new home sites or plan to make extensive design changes to their property. Fee includes drafting materials & reference book.

BEST PLANTS OF HAMPTON ROADS and INTRODUCTION TO LANDSCAPE DESIGN are great companion courses. One lets you discover the plants you must have and the other lets you plan where to plant them.

Develop your ideas just in time for fall planting with Director of Horticulture Brain O’Neil. This four-week course takes an in-depth look at the best performing plants for this area, including the culture, care and companions of these “must-have” plants.

Each participant will receive a comprehensive plant list.

Surviving the summer - Drought Tolerant Plants

Bummed about a brown yard? Lynette Swanson, Virginia Cooperative Extension Agent of Norfolk, will show you how you can still have a colorful garden this season with plant selection, water conservation and proper planting techniques. Learn which plants are best suited for low maintenance gardening during the hot days of summer.

Fabulous Blooms for Winter & Spring More then just the winter blues

Yes, you can enjoy color in your garden all year long and fall is the best time to plan and plant. Garden centers often mark down their plants in the fall when they are not so lush or blooming. You will leave this class ready with a list of the best things to plant now for winter beauty and early spring surprises; taught by Lynette Swanson, Virginia Cooperative Extension Agent of Norfolk.

SAVING SUMMER ANNUALS                                                                 

Monday • August 4 • 9:30-11:30AM

Go behind the scenes with gardener Lorraine Warner. Participants will learn the proper techniques of plant propagation - which plants can be rooted, divided and overwintered. As an added bonus, all participants will take home cuttings to plant in their own gardens to enjoy for years to come.

SEEDS OF SUMMER                                                                                   

Monday • September 8 • 9:30-11:30AM

Learn how, when and from which plants to collect, store and germinate seeds from gardener Lorraine Warner. Participants will take home an array of hardy and unusual seeds from plants at NBG for their own gardens.

BEGINNING BONSAI WORKSHOP

In partnership with Virginia Bonsai Society

Saturday • September 6 • 9AM-2PM

Learn the techniques of forming a bonsai tree from members of the Virginia Bonsai Society. These bonsai enthusiasts will explain the intricacies of bonsai design, as well as how to best care for your bonsai. Participants will actually pot, style and create their own trees to take home. Basic materials are included in the class fee.
